Sleep duration and quality linked to biological aging and cognitive health
Recent research indicates that sleep duration and quality are critical factors in biological aging and cognitive health. A study utilizing data from approximately half a million individuals in the UK Biobank suggests that both insufficient sleep (less than 6 hours) and excessive sleep (more than 8 hours) are associated with accelerated biological aging across various organ systems. The lowest aging indicators were observed in individuals sleeping between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night.
Experts emphasize that sleep quality is as vital as duration. Factors such as irregular sleep schedules, blue light exposure from smartphones, caffeine, alcohol, and medical conditions like sleep apnea can disrupt the deep sleep and REM stages necessary for cellular repair. To improve sleep hygiene and natural waking, specialists recommend utilizing natural light to regulate circadian rhythms and gradually adjusting sleep schedules.
Additionally, for those facing sleep deprivation, research from McGill University suggests that 20 minutes of exercise may mitigate some negative effects on memory and cognitive performance, performing similarly to a 90-minute nap in certain contexts by helping the brain use existing resources more efficiently.
