Sleep science: Factors influencing nighttime awakenings and sleep quality

Experts provide insights into the biological and psychological factors that influence sleep patterns and nighttime awakenings. Psychologist Becky Spelman notes that stress, intrusive thoughts, noise, light, and uncomfortable mattresses can hinder falling asleep. Conversely, the body's circadian rhythm, regulated by hormones like melatonin for sleep and cortisol for waking, helps the body transition into alertness in the morning.

Sleep medicine expert Nancy Foldvari-Shefer from the Cleveland Clinic explains that waking up around 3:00 AM is often linked to the body entering REM sleep. Stress and anxiety can create a cycle of frustration, especially when individuals constantly check the clock, which increases alertness. Other contributing factors include alcohol consumption, which disrupts sleep as it is metabolized, and late-day caffeine intake.

To improve sleep quality, experts recommend maintaining a dark, quiet, and cool bedroom environment, sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, and reducing bright light exposure before bed. Engaging in relaxing activities like reading or taking a warm bath may also help. If persistent issues like heavy snoring or breathing pauses occur, medical consultation is advised to rule out sleep apnea.
