Sleman and South Jakarta officials emphasize parenting to combat stunting

In Sleman, the stunting rate has decreased to 4.04% as of 2026. Despite this progress, Commission B of the Sleman Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) emphasizes that parenting patterns remain a critical factor in prevention. Dara Ayu Suharto, a member of Commission B, stated that the first five years of life are a golden period that determines a child's future physical, mental, and emotional quality of life. She noted that prevention must integrate nutritional fulfillment with improved sanitation and healthcare access.

In South Jakarta, the administration aims to reduce stunting prevalence from approximately 14% to 11.2% by the end of 2030. Rizky Hamid, Head of the South Jakarta Sub-department of Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control, reported a positive downward trend based on 2023 and 2024 data. Deputy Mayor Firmanudin Ibrahim highlighted that stunting is driven by more than just economic factors, pointing to parenting practices and a high level of reliance on caregivers as significant contributors. The local government plans to involve religious and community leaders to strengthen nutrition and parenting education.
