Slovak coalition nears agreement on electoral law amendment

The Slovak governing coalition is nearing a definitive agreement regarding amendments to the electoral law. According to Ján Richter, chairman of the Smer-SD parliamentary club, negotiations between the SNS and representatives of the Strana vidieka are moving toward a compromise on preferential voting.

The proposed change would limit the number of preferential votes a voter can cast for candidates on a single list from four to a maximum of two. While the threshold required to change a candidate's order on a list would remain unchanged, this reduction in circling candidates aims to resolve disputes between coalition partners. Richter indicated that both Smer and Hlas are prepared to support this compromise, noting that if the agreement fails, the entire coalition would likely still support the modified proposal.
