Overview

In August 2026, the Hlas-SD coalition party submitted a proposal to the National Council of the Slovak Republic to amend the Constitution. This amendment would permit citizens to end the current electoral term early through a referendum. To prevent political abuse, the proposal includes safeguards, such as prohibiting referendums during the first or last year of an electoral term. Because the amendment requires 90 votes, Hlas-SD would need support from opposition parties to pass it.

Negotiations between the SNS and Strana vidieka moved toward a compromise regarding preferential voting. The proposed change would reduce the number of preferential votes a voter can cast for candidates on a single list from four to a maximum of two. Representatives indicated that Smer and Hlas are prepared to support this compromise.
