Slovak mayors seek transport subsidies for long-term commuters
Mayors of Slovakia's regional cities are calling on the government to ensure that state-subsidized discounts for public transport include long-term commuters. Through the Union of Cities Slovakia, leaders requested that annual, semi-annual, and quarterly passes be eligible for the same state-funded relief offered to new passengers.
City leaders argue that regular commuters should not be financially disadvantaged compared to new users as the government seeks to compensate for rising fuel costs. Additionally, the mayors are requesting that the state subsidy cover 40% of the estimated costs for maintaining public transport services in the public interest, rather than the 30% currently proposed by the government.
Due to the necessary adjustments to sales systems, tariff rules, and communication channels, regional leaders have stated that an October 1 implementation date is not feasible.
