Slovakia public transport subsidy measures
Overview
To combat rising living costs driven by surging fuel prices, the Slovak government has initiated measures to reduce public transportation expenses. On September 22, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that second-class domestic train fares would be reduced by 50% for a 30-day period starting October 1.
Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) confirmed that this 50 percent reduction applies to standard, discounted, single-use, and time-based tickets, including weekly and monthly passes. The discount also extends to the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) and the Cog Railway (OŽ), though it excludes first-class travel, international journeys, seat reservations, and additional service fees. The Ministry of Transport initially estimated the rail discount's financial impact at approximately 5.3 million euros.
Following an increase in rail usage, Prime Minister Fico announced on October 7 that the 50% discount on second-class fares for public interest trains would be extended through November and likely into December. The government has allocated a 6-million-euro subsidy to maintain this measure through year-end. Data from October 5 indicates that the number of paying passengers rose by nearly 25% year-on-year to 52,315.
Regional and municipal bus fare reductions are also progressing. In Prešov, public transport fares are scheduled to decrease starting October 12, with basic fares for full-paying passengers being adjusted to match current discounted rates. This includes single-use, SMS, and monthly tickets, with the reduction expected to remain in effect until at least November 10. Additionally, temporary fare reductions will apply to regional buses within the IDS Východ network in the Prešov and Košice regions. The total state cost for supporting these various transport subsidies is estimated at nearly 13 million euros.
