Slovak psychologists counsel parents on rewarding and disciplining school report cards

Psychologists in Slovakia argue that parents should focus on a child’s effort and progress rather than solely on the grade displayed on a school report card. They recommend discussing the child’s experience at school, asking supportive questions, and offering symbolic rewards such as family outings or favorite treats. The experts warn that punitive measures – including bans on devices, restrictions on activities, or harsh criticism – can increase anxiety, undermine confidence, and strain parent‑child relationships.

Beáta Sedlačková of the Research Institute of Child Psychology emphasizes the importance of unconditional love, realistic expectations, and avoiding comparisons with peers or siblings. She suggests parents first process any disappointment privately before speaking with the child, and to frame the conversation around future improvement rather than past performance. Overall, the guidance encourages positive reinforcement, open communication, and a balanced view of grades as only one indicator of a child’s abilities.
