Slovakia acquires full ownership of JESS to accelerate nuclear project
The Slovak government has moved to take full ownership of the nuclear energy company JESS (Jadrová energetická spoločnosť Slovenska). The state-owned company JAVYS signed an agreement to purchase the remaining 49 percent stake from the Czech energy group ČEZ for 189.4 million euros.
This acquisition allows Slovakia to have 100 percent control over JESS, which is central to the planned construction of a new nuclear power source at the Jaslovské Bohunice site. Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that full ownership will enable the state to manage all existing documents and permits more effectively, potentially accelerating the construction process.
ČEZ CEO Daniel Beneš noted that the Bohunice site is among the best-prepared locations in Europe for nuclear construction, having already secured feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and necessary land. The project has already entered the phase of territorial decision-making under construction laws.
