Slovakia acquisition of JESS nuclear stake
Overview
The Slovak government has approved the buyout of the Czech energy group ČEZ’s 49 percent minority stake in Jadrová energetická spoločnosť Slovenska (JESS). The transaction, valued at 189.4 million euros, will result in the state-controlled company JAVYS holding a 100 percent stake in JESS.
This acquisition is intended to facilitate the development of a new nuclear power plant at the Jaslovské Bohunice site, which is projected to have an installed capacity of approximately 1200 megawatts. Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that full ownership will allow the state to manage documents and permits more effectively, potentially accelerating the construction process.
The project is considered a strategic investment with an estimated minimum cost of 10.938 billion euros and a target completion date of 2040. ČEZ CEO Daniel Beneš noted that the Bohunice site is among the best-prepared locations in Europe for nuclear construction, having already secured feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments.
