Slovakia and Czech fuel prices dip under new EU caps

In the week ending late May, Slovakia saw average retail prices for gasoline and diesel fall by about 7 cents per litre. Regular 95‑octane gasoline dropped below €1.75 / l (‑6.4 cents) and diesel fell under €1.65 / l (‑7.1 cents). Prices remain higher than a year earlier but are 6 % lower than the EU average, reflecting Brent crude’s slide to around $97 / bbl amid ongoing US‑Iran talks.

Meanwhile, the Czech finance ministry introduced statutory price caps for Thursday 4 June: natural‑95 gasoline was limited to 41.98 CZK / l (down from 42.25 CZK) and diesel to 39.51 CZK / l (up from 39.44 CZK). Premium fuels are not covered. The government also cut the excise tax on diesel by 1.939 CZK / l. These measures aim to curb the sharp rise in fuel costs caused by the Middle‑East conflict and to protect consumers.

Both countries attribute the recent price movements to fluctuations in world oil markets and to national regulatory responses designed to stabilise retail fuel costs.
