Slovakia and Czech Republic announce social security and pension reforms

Various social security and financial policy changes are approaching in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

In Slovakia, unemployment benefits will transition to a regressive model starting January 1, 2026. After the first three months at 50% of the daily assessment base, payments will decrease to 40% in the fourth month, 30% in the fifth, and 20% in the sixth. Additionally, a proposal by the SNS party aims to ensure a minimum pension of 708 euros for seniors aged 85 and older with at least 30 years of service, effective January 2027. The minimum wage is also set to increase to 972 euros in 2027.

In the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Health is proposing a system to reward preventive health screenings with direct bank transfers of 500 to 1,500 CZK. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance's economic growth predictions for health insurance contributions have been criticized by the Association of Health Insurance Companies as overly optimistic. Furthermore, Czech retirees will see a final valuation supplement in January before a shift to a calendar-month payment system in mid-2026. For those with side businesses, the threshold for mandatory pension insurance will rise to nearly 124,000 CZK in 2027, potentially making side income more tax-efficient.
