Overview

In early October 2026, new social security and financial policy changes were announced for Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, unemployment benefits are set to transition to a regressive model on January 1, 2026, decreasing from 50% of the daily assessment base in the first three months down to 20% by the sixth month. A proposal from the SNS party aimed to establish a minimum pension for seniors aged 85 and older who have completed at least 30 years of service. By mid-October, the National Council of the Slovak Republic approved an amendment to the Social Insurance Act. Effective January 1, 2027, these pensioners will be entitled to at least 710 euros, which is no less than 240 percent of the subsistence minimum for an adult. The Slovak minimum wage is also scheduled to increase to 972 euros in 2027.

In the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Health has proposed rewarding preventive health screenings with bank transfers of 500 to 1,500 CZK. Regarding pensions, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs has proposed increasing the solidarity fixed component from 4,900 CZK to 5,200 CZK starting in January 2027, which would raise the minimum old-age pension to 10,400 CZK. For retirees who continue working, the calculation base for their pension increases by 1.5% for every 90 days of employment, and they benefit from a reduced social security rate of 0.6%.

Additionally, the Czech supplementary pension savings market remains active, with a government proposal aiming to increase state contributions to 40% for individuals under 30. In 2027, the threshold for mandatory pension insurance for those with side businesses will rise to nearly 124,000 CZK.
