Slovakia battles rising colorectal cancer; experts call for stronger prevention

Slovak gastroenterologist Ladislav Kužel explains that about half of colorectal cancer cases could be avoided through healthier lifestyles and regular screening. He highlights dietary fiber from vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains, and warns against processed meats, excessive red meat, alcohol and smoking. Regular physical activity, weight control and a balanced gut microbiome are also recommended.

A 2026 WHO report projects a global surge in cancer diagnoses, with up to 35 million new cases per year by 2050 if prevention does not accelerate. In Slovakia, 4,402 new cancer cases were recorded in 2024, colorectal cancer being the most common. Experts cite processed meat consumption as a key risk factor and urge political prioritisation of preventive measures to curb future incidence.
