Poland expands health screenings & cancer prevention

Overview

Since late July 2026, Poland has intensified routine health checks—including blood work, mammography, and colonoscopy—to catch disease early. Previous efforts included school programs in Słupca, the “Answer in your blood” campaign, and mobile outreach at the Pol’and’Rock festival.

In early August, the National Health Fund expanded access to free cervical cancer screening for women aged 25–64 in the Lublin region via the myIKP app. Simultaneously, mobile mammography units began visiting nine locations in Bochnia County to provide breast cancer screenings for women aged 45–74. Localized community initiatives also emerged, such as the ‘Zdrowie w dobrym tonie’ event in Żukowo and the upcoming ‘Biała Niedziela’ in Mietków, which will offer diagnostic tests ranging from bone densitometry to mental health consultations.

Significant systemic reforms are also underway regarding lung cancer management. Effective October 1, the National Health Fund will finance nationwide screening using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for high-risk groups, a move intended to shift diagnoses from advanced to operable stages. Furthermore, the B.6 lung cancer treatment program is being restructured to prioritize earlier-stage therapies and introduce ‘therapeutic holidays,’ allowing patients to return to innovative treatments if disease progresses after a period of observation. While these advancements aim to reduce mortality, experts note that increasing the speed of diagnosis remains a critical challenge.
