Slovakia Defense Minister addresses drone threats and Baltic deployment

Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák stated that the threat to Slovakia stems from the war itself rather than specifically from Russia or Ukraine. He addressed incidents involving Russian and Ukrainian drones deviating from their courses and crashing, noting that each case is analyzed to determine if the crash site was the intended target. Kaliňák referenced NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s calls for restraint and the need to verify the intent behind such incursions.

Kaliňák also defended the parliamentary decision to deploy Slovak military units to the Baltic states, describing it as an unavoidable participation in peacekeeping and defensive missions.

In response, opposition MP Tomáš Valasek of the Progressive Slovakia party argued that Russian aggression against Ukraine is the direct cause of military drones entering the airspace, necessitating an increased allied presence on NATO’s eastern border. Valasek noted that NATO has identified Russia as a threat in strategic documents, a stance supported by Slovak leadership including President Peter Pellegrini.
