Slovak defense ministry political and security issues

Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák has faced scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest involving his former company, Kallan Consulting. Kaliňák confirmed that the firm provided lobbying and consulting services to Army Trade, a subsidiary of the Czech-owned CSG Group, to promote products in the United Arab Emirates. While Kaliňák maintains that this cooperation ended in 2023 prior to his appointment as Defense Minister, investigations by the Ján Kuciak Investigative Center (ICJK) note that the Slovak defense ministry has since entered into contracts with CSG Group companies with a framework value exceeding 60 billion euros.

Separately, Kaliňák has addressed regional security concerns, specifically regarding drone incursions involving Russian and Ukrainian hardware. He stated that the threat to Slovakia arises from the ongoing war rather than specific actors, noting that authorities analyze crash sites to determine intent. Additionally, the Minister defended the deployment of Slovak military units to the Baltic states as a necessary component of NATO peacekeeping and defensive missions, a move supported by Slovak leadership despite opposition arguments regarding the direct impact of Russian aggression.
