Slovakia delays registration of same‑sex marriages performed abroad

General Prosecutor Maroš Žilinka issued two formal warnings to the Ministry of the Interior after it failed to decide on applications from two couples seeking registration of their Austrian same‑sex marriages in Slovakia's special marriage register. The ministry did not act within the three‑month statutory deadline, prompting the prosecutor to stress the ministry's obligation to either register the marriages or formally reject them.

The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) responded by demanding that the ministry deny such applications, citing the Slovak Constitution's definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. KDH leader Milan Majerský urged Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj to act quickly, while acknowledging the European Court of Justice ruling that EU member states must recognise same‑sex marriages concluded abroad. The dispute highlights the tension between domestic constitutional interpretation and EU legal obligations.
