Central European heat wave pushes temps above 35 °C across Czech Republic and Slovakia

A major heat wave is sweeping Central Europe. Forecasts predict daily maxima of 30‑36 °C in the Czech Republic, with isolated peaks up to 36 °C on Saturday, while southwestern Slovakia is expected to see 31‑36 °C and severe humidity. Meteorologists warn of “tropical” temperatures, heat‑related health risks for seniors, children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses, and the likelihood of intense thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has issued alerts for the weekend, highlighting the need for regular fluid intake, avoidance of strenuous activity, and protection for pets and children in parked cars. In response to the anticipated heat, Czech water‑service company Lokni will automatically activate free chilled drinking‑water stations at railway and bus terminals whenever the next‑day forecast exceeds 30 °C, allowing unlimited 0.5‑liter servings to the public.

The heat wave is linked to warm air from North‑African Sahara and is being amplified by a developing El Niño, which meteorologists say could make the summer unusually hot across the region. Similar high‑temperature events are forecast for neighboring countries, with some parts of Europe expected to reach 40 °C.
