Slovakia faces demographic aging and waste management shifts

Slovakia is facing significant demographic and environmental transitions. Research led by Trnava University indicates that by 2060, nearly one-third of the population will be aged 65 or older. This shift necessitates a reevaluation of social services and prevention strategies to meet the needs of an aging society, particularly regarding physical health and memory.

In the environmental sector, Slovakia is working to address waste management challenges. Currently, approximately 38% of municipal waste ends up in landfills. To meet European standards that limit landfilling to 10% by 2035, the Center for Energy Recovery of Waste (CEZO) is being developed at the Slovnaft site in Bratislava. This facility aims to convert non-recyclable waste into heat and electricity, potentially supplying 15% to 30% of the heat required for the Bratislava-East system by 2030-2031.
