Slovakia faces extreme drought and ground frost warnings
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) has issued warnings regarding extreme drought and upcoming frosts across Slovakia. Extreme drought conditions are currently localized in the south of eastern Slovakia, with very dry conditions reported in regions including Gemer, Spiš, Šariš, Zemplín, and Abov.
In several areas, such as the Malé Karpaty, Veľká Fatra, Tatras, and the Slovak Ore Mountains, the precipitation deficit over the last 90 days has exceeded 150 mm. Much of the country is experiencing a deficit of more than 75 mm, with some regions facing drought conditions lasting over 180 days.
Additionally, SHMÚ has issued a first-degree warning for ground frost. Overnight temperatures are expected to reach between 0 and minus 3 degrees Celsius, posing a threat to low-growing vegetation. This warning applies to the Žilina, Prešov, and Košice regions, as well as most of the Banská Bystrica and Trenčín regions.
