Extreme weather and drought in Slovakia

Overview

Slovakia has been experiencing prolonged periods of extreme weather, characterized by severe drought and intense heat. Since late 2025, low precipitation and high temperatures have caused significant soil overheating, leading to damage in forestry and accelerated ripening of agricultural crops.

By late September, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) reported that precipitation deficits in certain regions, such as the Tatras and Malé Karpaty, exceeded 150 mm over a 90-day period. Some areas have faced drought conditions for more than 180 days. In addition to extreme drought localized in eastern regions like Gemer and Spiš, SHMÚ issued warnings for ground frost, with overnight temperatures expected to drop between 0 and minus 3 degrees Celsius, threatening low-growing vegetation.
