Slovakia highway tunnels to undergo major maintenance closures

The National Highway Company (NDS) has announced significant traffic restrictions for several tunnels in Slovakia due to scheduled autumn maintenance and technological upgrades.

The Horelica Tunnel on the D3 highway will be completely closed from Friday evening, September 11, until Sunday evening, September 13. This closure includes the adjacent I/11A road. Maintenance activities will involve cleaning the roadway, sidewalks, drainage systems, and noise barriers, as well as testing technological and information systems. Traffic will be diverted via roads I/11A, I/11B, and various third-class roads.

Additionally, the Sitina Tunnel in Bratislava will undergo a complex maintenance and modernization phase. Due to its high traffic volume, work will be conducted over nine consecutive weekends, primarily during nighttime hours. These works include modernizing camera systems, replacing damaged covers and expansion joints, and repairing wall cracks. While the tunnel will be closed during specific night windows, it is expected to be available during morning peak hours on Saturdays.

Other tunnels on the D1 highway, specifically the Žilina and Ovčiarsko tunnels, will also experience intermittent nighttime closures this week for seasonal maintenance.
