Slovakia implements digital Business Register and ID card updates

Slovakia is implementing significant administrative changes regarding business registration and digital identification. As of August 17, a new law has transformed the Slovak Business Register, prioritizing full digitalization. Electronic data published online will now hold legal validity, reducing the need for paper extracts for legal purposes. The new system features automatic synchronization with other state databases, meaning changes such as a director's address update will reflect automatically without requiring separate filings.

In a related development concerning digital identity, the Ministry of Interior has warned approximately 130,000 individuals that their qualified electronic signature (KEP) certificates will expire on September 28, 2026. This affects holders of CardOS v5.4 ID cards and residence permits issued between June 21, 2021, and November 30, 2022. While the physical ID cards remain valid for identity verification and basic electronic services, those requiring qualified electronic signatures for professional or official business—such as entrepreneurs, statutory representatives, and foreigners—must replace their documents to maintain signing capabilities.
