Slovakia and Poland implement public transport fare reductions
Slovakia and Poland are implementing various public transport discount measures to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices.
In Slovakia, the railway operator ZSSK is running a pilot program throughout October 2026, reducing second-class ticket prices by 50%. This reduction applies to both standard and discounted tickets, though it excludes first class, seat reservations, sleeper cars, and international connections.
Additionally, Slovak regional governments are introducing significant bus fare reductions. The Trnava Self-Governing Region has proactively implemented a 50% discount on regional and urban bus fares for October. Similarly, the Trenčín Self-Governing Region is introducing a 50% discount on standard bus fares. On a national level, the Slovak government has allocated nearly 12.85 million euros in subsidies to regional and municipal authorities to support a 50% reduction in bus fares for full-paying passengers starting October 12.
In Poland, measures are also being taken to combat rising fuel costs through railway fare reductions, though specific regional details vary.
