Czech Republic and Slovakia face intense heat wave with temperatures up to 36 °C

Meteorological services in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have issued heat‑wave warnings for the coming days. In the Czech Republic, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute predicts daytime highs of 31 °C to 36 °C, with high humidity, thunderstorms and possible downbursts, and expects record‑breaking temperatures on several stations. In Slovakia, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute warned of first‑ and second‑degree heat events in the Senec district from 19 June, with temperatures above 30 °C expected.

Health authorities warn that the extreme heat increases the risk of heatstroke and heat‑related illnesses, especially for seniors, children, pregnant women and those with chronic conditions. The South Bohemian emergency service reported a 20 % rise in calls for heat‑related emergencies. Medical experts advise staying in shade, hydrating with water or electrolyte drinks, avoiding alcohol, and cooling the body gradually rather than with icy water. Veterinarians also alert pet owners to the danger of overheating in dogs, recommending ample fresh water, shade and limited activity during peak heat.

Recreational water sites in Slovakia, such as the Teplý vrch reservoir, are reporting water temperatures of 24 °C to 30 °C, attracting visitors seeking relief.
