Slovakia proposes minimum pension increase for seniors aged 85+

Coalition MPs from the Slovak National Party (SNS) have proposed a new amendment to increase minimum pensions for the oldest seniors in Slovakia. The proposal aims to ensure that individuals aged at least 85 with sufficient pension insurance periods receive a monthly pension of approximately 708 euros.

If implemented, the new rules could take effect in January 2027. Eligibility is not automatic based on age alone; the Social Insurance Agency will determine benefits based on the number of years of pension insurance and the current pension amount. The age threshold for this specific support was lowered from 90 to 85 years following coalition negotiations.

Proponents, including MPs Roman Michelko, Dagmar Kramplová, Andrej Danko, and Karol Farkašovský, argue that current mechanisms do not sufficiently address the low base levels of pensions for those who retired years ago with low historical earnings. They note that while regular indexation exists, it does not eliminate the disparities caused by low initial pension calculations, especially as elderly citizens face rising costs for housing and medication.
