Slovakia Restores Historic Hotel Morava and Prison Museum

The historic Hotel Morava in Tatrzańska Łomnica reopened after a year‑and‑a‑half renovation that preserved its 1930s functionalist architecture while adding modern amenities. The restoration kept original wooden paneling, mirrors and artworks, and the surrounding town upgraded the access walkway.

In Košice, the Miklušova prison complex – a pair of 15th‑century Gothic buildings that served as a jail and torture chamber until 1909 – is set for a €2 million overhaul. The project, financed by European Union funds, the Slovak state and the local municipality, will refurbish the structures, modernise interiors and create a new exhibition on the history of incarceration. Archaeological investigations have already uncovered valuable artifacts.

A separate restoration effort focuses on the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Trepcu, which survived the submergence of its village by the Domaša reservoir. After an earthquake in 2023 revealed severe damage, experts reinforced the tower and repaired the building to prevent collapse.
