Slovakia sees record rise in syphilis cases

Slovak health officials report a historic peak in syphilis infections, the highest number recorded since monitoring began. The surge mirrors a broader European trend, with the continent logging nearly 46,000 cases in 2024, more than double the figure from a decade earlier. Physicians warn that many infections are asymptomatic, allowing silent transmission. Urologist Ján Švihra noted typical symptoms such as burning during urination and testicular pain, while gynecologist Zuzana Kosibová highlighted risks of pelvic inflammation and potential infertility for women.

If left untreated, syphilis can lead to serious complications, including miscarriage, premature birth, or congenital defects. Experts attribute the rise to changes in sexual behavior, increased testing, and more precise diagnostics. They urge anyone with recent risky contact to undergo screening and stress that consistent condom use and awareness of partners' health remain the most effective prevention measures.
