Health authorities in Slovakia reported a historic peak in syphilis cases in July 2026, marking the highest number recorded since systematic monitoring began. Within the same week, Bulgaria’s National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases announced a 30‑40% rise in syphilis infections compared with the previous year, alongside a three‑fold increase in gonorrhea cases. The director highlighted the need for better public health information and safe‑sex practices while also noting related vector‑borne concerns such as West Nile fever and Lyme disease in the region.
