Slovakia to introduce mandatory mathematics graduation exams
Slovakia is implementing a new system for mandatory mathematics graduation exams (maturita) for students entering secondary schools in September 2027. The first cohort will face these mandatory exams in 2031.
The reform introduces two levels of difficulty. The basic level will consist of an external test focused on the practical application of mathematical knowledge, such as working with data, geometry, and basic operations. The advanced level will be more demanding, including open-ended tasks where students must explain their reasoning, as well as an oral component. The advanced level is intended for students in mathematical and eight-year grammar schools.
To support this change, schools will increase mathematics instruction hours, requiring at least 12 weekly hours for the basic level and 18 hours for the advanced level over four years of study. Additionally, approximately 18,000 teachers will undergo 50 hours of specialized training to implement new methodological materials and focus on logical thinking rather than rote learning. The Ministry of Education plans for these exam results to be considered during university admissions processes.
