Central European mathematics education reforms

Overview

Educational reforms regarding mathematics assessment are being implemented in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

In Slovakia, the government is introducing mandatory mathematics graduation exams (maturita) for students entering secondary school in September 2027. This decision by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth follows concerns from schools, universities, and employers regarding declining mathematical proficiency. Data indicates that the percentage of students voluntarily choosing mathematics as an exam subject fell from 14.3% in 2015 to 10.4% in 2026.

The system features two difficulty levels: a basic level focused on practical application for daily life and work, and an advanced level involving an external test and an oral component for students pursuing math intensive higher education. To support this, schools will increase weekly instruction hours, and approximately 18,000 teachers will receive specialized training to prioritize logical thinking over rote learning. The first students affected by this change are expected to graduate in 2031.

However, the Slovak Chamber of Teachers (SKU) has expressed opposition, arguing that the mandatory exam may not accurately reflect the quality of education received over a four year period. Educators in regions such as Záhorie have also raised concerns regarding curriculum planning and a lack of specific regulatory details.

In the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education is simplifying high school entrance exams to ensure fairness across different educational frameworks. These changes specifically target mathematics, removing complex tasks in algebra and geometry, such as binomial expansion and cylinder volume calculations. While the Ministry aims for standardization, some educators have expressed concern that these changes may prevent high achieving students from distinguishing themselves.
