Slovakia to introduce mandatory mathematics graduation exams

The Slovak Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth has decided to make mathematics a mandatory subject for the school-leaving exam (maturita). This decision follows concerns from schools, universities, and employers regarding declining mathematical proficiency among young people. Data shows that the percentage of students voluntarily choosing mathematics as an exam subject fell from 14.3% in 2015 to 10.4% in 2026.

The new system will feature two levels: a basic level consisting of an external test focused on practical skills for daily life and work, and an advanced level involving both an external test and an oral exam for students planning to pursue higher education in math-intensive fields. The first students affected by this change will enter secondary schools in September 2027 and are expected to graduate in 2031.

While the Ministry plans to shift teaching from rote memorization to logical reasoning and will provide training for approximately 18,000 educators, the Slovak Chamber of Teachers (SKU) has expressed opposition. The SKU argues that the mandatory exam acts as an undesirable conclusion that may not accurately reflect the quality of education received throughout the four-year study period. Educators in regions such as Záhorie have also raised concerns regarding curriculum planning and the lack of specific regulatory details.
