Slovakia to launch new mandatory car‑insurance checks from August 2026

From 1 August 2026 Slovakia will introduce a new system of checks on mandatory vehicle liability insurance (PZP). The programme, known as Lex PZP, will automatically identify vehicles without valid insurance, cross‑checking insurer databases, the Slovak Insurance Bureau and the central vehicle register. Vehicles lacking coverage for more than 30 days can be fined automatically, with penalties ranging from €120 to €900 and repeat fines every 150 days.

The reforms also require that insurance contracts contain accurate data, especially the vehicle’s VIN. The Union Insurance Company warned that a mismatched VIN could cause a car to be classified as uninsured even if the premium is paid. Police will also be able to verify insurance status during routine traffic checks and technical inspections. Failure to correct the issue by the end of September may lead to removal of the vehicle from the registration list as early as October.
