Slovakia mandatory car insurance reforms

Slovakia is introducing a new system to enforce compulsory vehicle liability insurance (PZP) beginning 1 August 2026. The programme, called Lex PZP, will automatically cross‑check insurer databases, the Slovak Insurance Bureau and the central vehicle register to identify cars without valid coverage for more than 30 days. Owners of uninsured vehicles will face automatic fines of €120‑€900, with higher penalties for repeat offences every 150 days, and persistent non‑compliance may lead to removal of the vehicle from the registration list.

The interior ministry will also send electronic notifications to owners whose cars have been uninsured for over two years, urging regularisation by 30 September. From 1 October, insurance status will be checked during technical and emission inspections and at police road checks. The reforms require accurate VIN data in insurance contracts, and police will be able to verify insurance status during routine traffic checks. Failure to correct issues by the end of September could result in the vehicle’s deregistration as early as October.
