Slovakia warns of high forest fire risk due to drought
The Slovak Fire and Rescue Service (HaZZ) has issued warnings regarding a high risk of forest fires across most districts in Slovakia. The danger is driven by a combination of sustained high temperatures, drought conditions, and localized strong winds, which facilitate the rapid spread of flames.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that several European countries are currently facing similar heatwaves and severe wildfires. Authorities emphasize that many fires are caused by human negligence, such as improperly extinguished campfires, discarded cigarettes, or hot vehicle components igniting dry vegetation.
In drought-stricken areas, strict precautions are advised, including avoiding open flames and prohibiting the burning of dry vegetation. Officials recommend using only officially designated fire sites and urge citizens to avoid grilling or using pyrotechnics during periods of heightened danger. Residents are asked to report any smoke or fire immediately via emergency services.
