Slovakia's Industry Calls for Faster Wind and Solar Expansion

Four Slovak industry organisations – the Slovak Association of Sustainable Energy (SAPI), the Association of Industrial Unions and Transport (APZD), the Slovak Association for Electromobility (SEVA) and the Slovak Automotive Industry Association (ZAP SR) – have urged the government to accelerate the development of wind and solar power. They argue that, although Slovakia already generates roughly 20% of its electricity from zero‑emission sources, mainly nuclear and hydro, the lack of affordable, certified green electricity could jeopardise investor confidence, jobs and the sector’s competitiveness.

The groups point to EU legislation, such as the RED III directive and the Net‑Zero Industry Act, which require certified renewable electricity for sustainable investment. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reiterated that Europe will need both renewable sources and nuclear energy to meet climate neutrality. Without a rapid scale‑up of wind and solar, the industry fears a loss of investment and the erosion of Slovakia’s position among EU leaders in low‑carbon electricity generation.
