Slovakia renewable energy policy debate

In late July 2026, Slovakia’s energy debate sharpened around the role of wind power and the push for decentralised renewables. On 22 July, Branislav Strýček, CEO of Slovenské elektrárne, dismissed large-scale wind farms as unsuitable for the country’s limited sites and warned against EU pressure to install turbines. Greenpeace Slovakia countered, citing recent Russian-linked cyber-attacks on the central grid and urging Prime Minister Robert Fico to adopt community-scale renewable generation to boost security and reduce dependence on Russian fuels.

Three days later, on 25 July, four Slovak industry organisations – SAPI, APZD, SEVA and ZAP SR – called on the government to accelerate wind and solar development. They argued that, despite 20% of electricity already coming from low-carbon sources such as nuclear and hydro, a lack of affordable certified green power threatens investor confidence, jobs and competitiveness. The groups referenced EU RED III and the Net-Zero Industry Act, highlighting EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s insistence that Europe needs both renewables and nuclear to meet climate targets.

On 13 August, the Ministry of Environment significantly curtailed plans for wind energy expansion. Following a strategic environmental assessment, seven out of eight originally proposed acceleration zones were rejected. Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba stated the decision followed expert findings and feedback from local governments, noting that many locations lacked necessary technical studies. Only one pilot zone in the Michalovce district of eastern Slovakia will be retained. This decision impacts a commitment under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which involves 430 million euros in funding.
