Slovakia's Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok announces stricter mandatory vehicle insurance rules

From 1 August 2026 a new amendment to Slovakia's compulsory contract insurance (PZP) law will take effect, tightening rules for vehicle owners. The Interior Ministry will begin in August sending electronic notifications to owners of cars that have been uninsured for more than two years, urging them to regularise their insurance by 30 September.

A second phase starts on 1 October, introducing automated cross‑checks of insurance status during technical and emission inspections and at police road checks. Vehicles without valid PZP for over 30 days will be automatically fined between €120 and €900, with repeat offences attracting higher penalties every 150 days. Persistent non‑compliance may lead to permanent removal of the vehicle from the registration database, preventing its use on public roads.
