Slovakia's National Highway Company advances Karpaty Tunnel project and completes Lanfranconi Bridge works
The National Highway Company (NDS) has opened a tender for the design documentation of the D4 Bratislava‑Rača to Záhorská Bystrica section, which will include the nearly 12‑kilometre Karpaty tunnel – the longest road tunnel in Slovakia. The tunnel is expected to link the D1 and D2 motorways and could cut transit truck traffic through Bratislava by 30‑40 %, easing congestion, reducing noise and emissions, and improving safety.
Separately, NDS announced the early completion of the left‑hand bridge end replacement on the Lanfranconi bridge of the D2 motorway. The work finished about three weeks ahead of schedule, with a temporary speed limit of 80 km/h maintained. The early finish allows preparation for a large‑scale road surface repair on the same stretch, with further bridge work to shift to the right side in the coming weeks. Both projects are part of broader efforts to modernise Bratislava’s highway network.
