Slovenia advances average speed measurement on highways

Slovenia is advancing the implementation of average speed measurement systems on several highway sections. The Office of Metrology has completed the first certification of iCar5 speed meters, manufactured by MacQ, for three of the four planned sections.

The certified locations include the Logatec–Vrhnika stretch toward Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Brod–Vodice stretch toward Kranj, and the Grosuplje–Ivančna Gorica stretch toward Novo Mesto. Certification for the fourth section, Podmilj–Ločica, is still in progress.

Unlike traditional radar, these systems calculate a vehicle's average speed over the entire monitored distance by recording entry and exit times. DARS, the state motorway operator, stated that the system will be handed over to the police only after all four sections are certified, the supplier Intermatic completes all contractual requirements, and staff training and police system integration are finalized. Once operational, the police will conduct a testing period before official enforcement begins. The stated goal of the system is to improve traffic safety and reduce speeds rather than purely for punishment.
