Slovenian highway average speed enforcement implementation

Slovenia is implementing section speed measurement systems on major highways to improve road safety and prevent drivers from slowing down only when approaching traditional radar cameras.

Initially, the state motorway operator, Dars, announced that infrastructure for calculating average speeds over specific stretches would be operational by September. The project targeted four key locations: the Primorska highway, the Dolenjska highway, the Gorenjska highway, and the Štajerska highway. While technical installations were complete, the system required police involvement and metrological certifications.

Progress has since been made with the Office of Metrology completing the first certification of iCar5 speed meters for three of the four planned sections: Logatec–Vrhnika, Ljubljana Brod–Vodice, and Grosuplje–Ivančna Gorica. Certification for the fourth section, Podmilj–Ločica, remains in progress. Dars stated that the system will be handed over to the police only after all sections are certified, contractual requirements are met, and staff training and system integration are finalized. The police intend to conduct a testing period before official enforcement begins.
