Slovenia announces education reforms and curriculum updates

Slovenian Minister of Education Borut Rončević has announced a series of reforms aimed at strengthening the national education system. The government's strategy focuses on four key objectives: providing high-quality, ideologically neutral education; reducing administrative burdens for teachers to bolster their authority; strengthening the link between research and the economy; and improving opportunities for youth employment and independence.

Rončević emphasized the need to address staffing shortages to ensure the teaching profession remains an attractive career choice. He stated that the ministry aims to foster a society of knowledge, creativity, and responsibility.

Concurrently, Jasna Rojc, director of the Institute for Education, detailed the phased implementation of renewed curricula. In the upcoming school year, new curricula will be introduced in the 1st, 4th, and 7th grades of primary schools, with specific subjects starting in the 6th grade. The reform process for kindergartens is expected to conclude by the 2028/29 school year, while the updates for primary and secondary education are slated for completion by 2029/30. These updates are being funded through a combination of European recovery funds and the state budget.
