Overview

Slovenian Minister of Education Borut Rončević has announced a series of reforms intended to strengthen the national education system. The government strategy focuses on providing high-quality, ideologically neutral education, reducing administrative burdens for teachers, strengthening the connection between research and the economy, and improving youth employment opportunities.

To address staffing shortages and foster a “society of knowledge, creativity, and responsibility,” the ministry is implementing phased curriculum updates. New curricula will be introduced in the 1st, 4th, and 7th grades of primary schools in the upcoming school year, with specific subjects starting in the 6th grade. The reform process for kindergartens is expected to conclude by the 2028/29 school year, while updates for primary and secondary education are slated for completion by 2029/30. These updates are being funded through the state budget and European recovery funds.
