Slovenia corn production faces significant decline
Slovenia is facing a significant decline in corn production due to drought, disease, and pests. Preliminary data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS) indicates that corn grain production is expected to drop by approximately 19 percent compared to last year, with an estimated yield of 247,200 tons.
The situation is even more critical for silage corn, where total production is projected to decrease by one-third. Average yields for silage are expected to fall by about 25 percent compared to the previous year. These shortages are expected to heavily impact the livestock sector, particularly intensive cattle farming, which relies on corn silage as a primary feed source.
In response to the scarcity, the price of silage bales has doubled in some areas, rising from approximately 30 to 60 euros. Experts warn that while state grain reserves might assist pig and poultry farmers, they cannot replace silage for cattle. Farmers are advised to harvest as soon as possible and ensure proper drying and storage to mitigate risks from fungi and mycotoxins.
