Slovenian corn production decline

Overview

Slovenia is experiencing a significant decline in corn production driven by drought, disease, and pests. Preliminary data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS) indicates that corn grain production is expected to drop by approximately 19 percent compared to the previous year, with an estimated yield of 247,200 tons.

The situation is particularly severe for silage corn, where total production is projected to decrease by one-third and average yields are expected to fall by about 25 percent. These shortages are anticipated to heavily impact the livestock sector, specifically intensive cattle farming that relies on corn silage as a primary feed source.

In response to the scarcity, the price of silage bales has doubled in certain areas, rising from approximately 30 to 60 euros. While state grain reserves may assist pig and poultry farmers, experts warn they cannot replace silage for cattle. Farmers have been advised to harvest as soon as possible and prioritize proper drying and storage to mitigate risks from mycotoxins and fungi.
