Slovenia: Minister Vrtovec advocates for JEK 2 nuclear project

At the Energetika 2026 conference in Bled, Slovenia's Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Jernej Vrtovec, emphasized that the construction of a second nuclear block at the Krško power plant (JEK 2) is essential for the country's energy sovereignty and industrial competitiveness.

Vrtovec stated his intention to advance the project as far as possible during the current mandate to ensure it cannot be halted. He noted that energy policy serves as a combined development, security, and industrial policy.

To address financing challenges and mitigate public risks, Dr. Jože P. Damijan from the University of Ljubljana proposed a partnership model. This model suggests involving the state, private companies, neighboring countries, and even households to distribute costs and benefits, such as lower electricity prices.

The conference also highlighted concerns regarding Europe's industrial strength. Vesna Nahtigal, Director General of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, warned that high energy costs and slow strategic responses are causing Europe to lose industrial power to global competitors.
