Slovenia JEK 2 nuclear project development
Overview
Slovenia’s Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Jernej Vrtovec, has advocated for the construction of a second nuclear block at the Krško power plant, known as JEK 2. During the Energetika 2026 conference, Vrtovec stated that the project is essential for energy sovereignty and industrial competitiveness, expressing his intention to advance the project during his mandate to prevent it from being halted.
To address financing, experts have proposed a partnership model involving the state, private companies, neighboring countries, and households to distribute costs and benefits.
Following the minister’s remarks, the Mayor of Krško, Janez Kerin, responded to the push for the JEK 2 project. Kerin invited the minister to a working meeting to discuss open questions, emphasizing that a project of this scale requires continuous dialogue with the local community and the Posavje region to ensure local environmental, social, and developmental needs are integrated into the planning.
