Slovenia faces thunderstorms and heat wave as Arso issues red warnings

After nearly two weeks of extreme June heat that set new temperature records across Slovenia, the weather pattern is shifting. The Environment Agency (Arso) reports that several thunderstorm cells have formed behind the coastal area and are moving inland toward the central part of the country. Radar shows stronger rainfall in a band from Postojna to Idrija, with wind gusts of 60 km/h recorded at Postojna.

Hail has already been reported in Postojna and Borovnica, and the storms are bringing heavy downpours, frequent lightning and local gusts. Temperatures remain high, ranging from 29 °C to 36 °C, while the red‑alert heat warning stays in force for the southwest, central and southeast regions. The heat wave is expected to ease on Thursday with clearer skies and lighter breezes, and Friday should bring mostly sunny weather.

Arso continues to monitor the situation, noting that the most intense heat this summer was recorded at Podnanos at 38.7 °C, the highest June temperature in Slovenian history.
