Slovenia issues mosquito bite prevention guidance as West Nile risk rises

The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) in Slovenia warned that while most local mosquito species are harmless, some can transmit tropical diseases such as West Nile virus. The institute advises citizens to eliminate standing water in gardens, buckets, and plant trays, wear light clothing that covers the skin during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk, and apply approved repellents to skin and clothing.

Additional measures include installing fine-mesh screens on windows, especially for sleeping areas, and avoiding the application of repellents to eyes, mouth, or broken skin. Although infections are rare, NIJZ highlighted that West Nile virus can cause severe neurological complications, underscoring the importance of preventive steps.
